Is there a job you hate around your house? Mine is unloading the dishwasher. Our dishwasher is right in front of our dish cupboard, so it means that I unload everything onto the counter, then into the cupboard. I’ve also been dreaming of the day that my kids could take over that chore for me, or at least help out occasionally. And they have put dishes away before, but it means them standing on the cupboard to put the plates, bowls and glasses away.
Not only is it too high for them to put away dishes, but it also means it is high up for them to get out dishes. So getting a bowl out for breakfast means either I have to step in and help, or they are going to be standing on the counter.
I had an ah-hah moment and decided that my dishes didn’t have to go in that particular cupboard. I swapped out my casserole/bowl and serving dish cupboard with my dishes cupboard. So it is low to the ground so the kids can completely help! They can help set the table now and help put away the dishes. Plus when I put away the dishes it is one motion of out of the dishwasher, into the cupboard. No more middle step of stacking on the counter!
The kids were out playing and I got everything switched around and called them in, announcing I had a suprise for them. They weren’t really too thrilled with my surprise, but in the days since we have made the switch, they have helped to set the table without my intervention. And yesterday Miss C put away all the dishes by herself and was very proud to be able to help.
Is it a pain to lean down to get out a glass or a plate? Yes, it is. But the trade-off of children who are now able to help the family and help themselves is totally worth it.
